Indirect Image Registration with Large Diffeomorphic Deformations

The paper adapts the large deformation diffeomorphic metric mapping framework for image registration to the indirect setting where a template is registered against a target that is given through indirect noisy observations. The registration uses diffeomorphisms that transform the template through a (group) action. These diffeomorphisms are generated by solving a flow equation that is defined by a velocity field with certain regularity. The theoretical analysis includes a proof that indirect image registration has solutions (existence) that are stable and that converge as the data error tends so zero, so it becomes a well-defined regularization method. The paper concludes with examples of indirect image registration in 2D tomography with very sparse and/or highly noisy data.Comment: 43 pages, 4 figures, 1 table; revise

Pseudo-Hermitian Hamiltonians Generating Waveguide Mode Evolution

We study the properties of Hamiltonians defined as the generators of transfer matrices in quasi- one-dimensional waveguides. For single- or multi-mode waveguides obeying flux conservation and time-reversal invariance, the Hamiltonians defined in this way are non-Hermitian, but satisfy symmetry properties that have previously been identified in the literature as "pseudo Hermiticity" and "anti-PT symmetry". We show how simple one-channel and two-channel models exhibit transitions between real, imaginary, and complex eigenvalue pairs.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figure

Simulation of stochastic Volterra equations driven by space--time L\'evy noise

In this paper we investigate two numerical schemes for the simulation of stochastic Volterra equations driven by space--time L\'evy noise of pure-jump type. The first one is based on truncating the small jumps of the noise, while the second one relies on series representation techniques for infinitely divisible random variables. Under reasonable assumptions, we prove for both methods LpL^p- and almost sure convergence of the approximations to the true solution of the Volterra equation. We give explicit convergence rates in terms of the Volterra kernel and the characteristics of the noise. A simulation study visualizes the most important path properties of the investigated processes

A Micromechanical Parylene Spiral-Tube Sensor and Its Applications of Unpowered Environmental Pressure/Temperature Sensing

    Get PDF
A multi-function micromechanical pressure/temperature sensor incorporating a microfabricated parylene spiral tube is presented. Its visible responses in expression of in situ rotational tube deformation enable unpowered sensing directly from optical device observation without electrical or any powered signal transduction. Sensor characterizations show promising pressure (14.46°/kPa sensitivity, 0.11 kPa resolution) and temperature (6.28°/°C sensitivity, 0.24 °C resolution) responses. Depending on different application requests, this sensor can be individually utilized to measure pressure/temperature of systems having one property varying while the other stabilized, such as intraocular or other in vivo pressure sensing of certain apparatus inside human bodies or other biological targets. A straightforward sensor-pair configuration has also been implemented to retrieve the decoupled pressure and temperature readouts, hence ultimately realizes a convenient environmental pressure and temperature sensing in various systems

Towards a Fisher-information description of complexity in de Sitter universe

Recent developments on holography and quantum information physics suggest that quantum information theory come to play a fundamental role in understanding quantum gravity. Cosmology, on the other hand, plays a significant role in testing quantum gravity effects. How to apply this idea to a realistic universe is still missing. Here we show some concepts in quantum information theory have their cosmological descriptions. Particularly, we show complexity of a tensor network can be regarded as a Fisher information measure(FIM) of a dS universe, followed by several observations: (i) the holographic entanglement entropy has a tensor-network description and admits a information-theoretical interpretation, (ii) on-shell action of dS spacetime has a same description of FIM, (iii) complexity/action(CA) duality holds for dS spacetime. Our result is also valid for f(R)f(R) gravity, whose FIM exhibits the same features of a recent proposed LnL^n norm complexity.Comment: 18 pages, 3 figures. v2: improvements to presentation, fixes typos and matches published versio

    Floating-disk parylene micro check valve

    Get PDF
A novel micro check valve which has nearly ideal fluidic shunting behaviors is presented. Featuring a parylene-based floating disk, this surface-micromachined check valve ultimately realizes both zero forward cracking pressure and zero reverse leakage in fluidic operations. Two different floating disk designs have been implemented to demonstrate functionality of the microvalve. Experimental data of underwater testing successfully show that in-channel floating-disk valves in both designs have great fluidic performance close to an ideal check valve, except the additional fluidic resistance in the order of 10^(13) N-s/m^5 based on dimensions of the fabricated devices. Their pressure loading limit have been confirmed to be higher than 300 kPa without water leakage. This type of micro check valve is believed to have great use of flow control in integrated microfluidics and lab-on-a-chip applications
